Project: Mobile Environmental Sensor Unit (MESU)
The Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML) develops and optimizes processes and systems for the maritime supply chain. It supports private and public sector clients, e.g., ports, providers of logistics services and shipping companies, in initializing and implementing innovations by practice-oriented research projects.
The team Maritime Technologies & Biomimetics (MTB) of Fraunhofer CML is focused on developing and analysing green technologies to increase energy efficiency, sustainability and environmental impact and on prototyping innovative biomimetic solutions and robotic applications.
Fraunhofer CML has developed sensor box – the Mobile Environmental Sensor Unit (MESU). It includes electro-chemical sensors to detect NO, NO2, SO2, CO2, PM2.5, and PM10. The box has just been applied within the measurement campaign C2 of the SCIPPER project where it collected emissions data from moving vessels and sent it to the Environmental Shipping and Monitoring Centre (ESMC) in real time. There the sensor data can be displayed, interacted with, and analysed.

Project: Emission reduction of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), soot and ash – all in one compact system
or engines powered by heavy or light oil, Steuler Anlagenbau has developed a process that keeps the pollutants safely below the legal emission values with one (DeDust + DeSOx) or two (+ DeNOx) process steps in one compact system without preconditioning.
The 1st process (DeDust + DeSOx) works completely on a dry basis. The reaction substances are converted into natural components of the ambient air or returned to the raw material cycle in form of dry, recyclable residues.
All chemicals required are used in the form of powder, granules or pellets. If denitrification (DeNOx) is necessary depending on emission limits, commercially available ammonia / urea in liquid form is used.

Project: Emission-free power generation systems
eCap Marine offers environmental-friendly and flexible clean power solutions. We design compact systems, so-called PowerPacs, that can be moved to multiple operation locations, maximising their utilisation, and achieving economic benefits. Our innovative, future-projected technologies include using fuel cells in combination with batteries, pure battery-electric driven concepts or gas motors that can run with any gaseous fuels.
We started our mission of creating clean power solutions in the port of Hamburg with the world’s first floating power plant, the Becker Power Barge ‘’Hummel’’ back in 2013. The innovative barge currently uses NG or LNG as fuel and has significantly lowered emissions of harmful substances (CO2, NOx, SOx, Particulates) compared to diesel engines of cruise ships which are used to generate power during layovers in port. By doing so, the Becker Power Barge overall improves the air quality in harbour cities.
Now, focussing on the emission-free conversion of ships, our recent projects for example deal with a containerized fuel cell-based power supply system in addition to the power train of an offshore supply vessel. We also investigate in the conversion of an inland waterway vessel to survey the power generation with an LNG-hybrid, battery-electric or fuel cell-electric power train. To serve a benefit from the conversions or newbuilds not only ecologically, but also economically, we are delighted to help with funding processes in cooperation with the owners.
